Root for the Home Team: 5 Ways to Build Unity in the Family

May 16, 2025

Summer and ballgames fit together like a hand and a (baseball) glove. The Rockies, that’s my team! Every player has a specific job with a certain skill set. All players focus on playing their best in order for the team to win. What a perfect picture of unity.

Families can have that same unity by functioning like a team. Here are 5 ways to build family unity.
  1. Share a common short or long term goal.
  2. Bring Your A-Game.
  3. Root for each other.
  4. Serve each other without keeping score.
  5. Appreciate each others skills and abilities.

Plus Bonus: Pray for and with each other.

Don’t confuse unity with uniformity. Contrast the Rockies to the Rockettes. The dancers on the danceline move in sync, legs kick in unison and at the same height. Perfectly uniform. Families are to function more like the Rockies. Same team, different gifting.

If you would like your family to have more of an all for one and one for all attitude my book The Messy Life of Parenting: Powerful and Practical Ways to Strengthen Family Connections would be helpful.

Pro-Parenting or Grandparenting Tip: Appreciate and support each family member’s gifting even if it is different from your own. And..root, root, root for the home team!

“Just as each of us has one body with many members,
and these members do not have the same function,
so in Christ we who are many form one body,
and each member belongs to all the others.”
Romans 12:4-5
